This was my first time camping in the Alabama Hills in Lone Pine, specifically to photograph the Milky Way, also first time, on a weekend where was no moon present. The night sky was darker than I have ever experienced. Thousands of stars, and shooting stars, on full display. My buddy and I set up our cameras and tripods and went to work over a period of three hours from 10:30pm to 1:30am. If we weren’t so tired from the hike that day, I wish I had the energy to stay up later to capture the Milky Way when it would be perfectly vertical over us.
I used the iPhone app, PhotoPills, extensively to set up the Milky Way shots in the sky just right, although we should have planned our spot better so that there would be some cool focus items in the foreground. Lesson learned for next time. Overall I’m very happy with my shots and first time doing astro photography.
Everything was shot on my Sony A7iii with my Tamron 20mm f2.8 lens. Next time I’ll make sure to bring my Sigma 16mm f1.8. ISO range at 3200 and 6400 was used and exposure was set at around 25 seconds.
