Passing thru Owens Valley…

On our drive out of Panamint Valley and Star Wars canyon, we merge onto the highway that takes us past Darwin, Keeler and the Owens Lake. On either side of us, as we traverse this valley, is the Inyo Mountain Range on one side and the beginnings of the Sierra Nevada mountain range that includes Mt Whitney and Mt Williamson here in these photos.

This was very late in the day, I want to say around 5:30/6pm. The sun setting behind the Sierra Nevada mountains created some very nice shadows, colors and clouds for these photos. I’m really happy with all 4 of these photos, and for different reasons, but I think my most favorite is the telephone poles in a line going into an infinite distance with the very fine grain desert sand beneath it. In that photo, way back in the day before Los Angeles siphoned all of the water away for LA County use, Owens Lake was much larger and this area would have been the lake floor.

Sidebar: dwindling lakes in the Sierra Nevada range, specifically those lakes which are damned and controlled by LADWP, are a sad sight this year especially. Several of my favorite lakes, Sabrina, North & South Lakes, Grant Lake and Lundy Lake, are all very, very low and very sad to see this year. Curbing water usage in a major way needs to happen urgently or we aren’t going to have these lakes and areas to enjoy.
