A visit to the Bodie Hotel in Bridgeport, CA

First time visiting Bridgeport this past weekend and I really enjoyed the vibe of the small town feel. Several great choices for restaurants, the historical buildings scattered throughout town and the plaques to tell the history at each location.

Speaking of history, I’m a huge fan of the old mining ghost town, Bodie. Naturally, a visit to Bridgeport can’t happen without a visit to check out the Bodie Hotel. This building is rich in its own history. It was originally built and located in Bodie, and in 1900 it was uprooted and moved to Bridgeport to continue serving as a hotel. The building was rolled across the bumpy dirt roads for the 12 miles out of Bodie, out to the main road and then another 14 miles into Bridgeport… all done with a large team of mules. That’s an amazing feat in of itself. All of the original fixtures and furniture made the move inside the building as well. Amazing!

The new owners of the Bodie hotel were very nice and gracious to give my buddy and I the full tour of the hotel and the history that went along with each room. We saw how much restoration has gone into each of the hotel rooms as well as the public spaces. No detail was spared. From the pressed tin ceiling in the downstairs main room to the felt flocked wallpaper in each of the rooms along with the restored original wood floors. Even the windows are the original leaded glass from the early days.

I understand that 4th of July weekend is not to be missed in Bridgeport. Personally, the Bodie Hotel would be an excellent stay for any vacation, especially during fall colors in early October! Across the street from the hotel (and a great view of it from the front facing hotel room) is the historic Bridgeport Courthouse as well as the County Seat.

Check out the Bodie Hotel and soak up some local history while you’re there relaxing! http://www.the Bodiehotel.com.
