We made the trek out to the Chemung Mine, with Sony A7RIII camera in hand. I’ve seen all of these amazing photos online over the last few years and read up on the history of the Chemung Mine (huge history buff here), so it made sense to pay a visit to Chemung and Masonic Mines (Masonic will be in an upcoming blog post). Since its no secret to my friends and family how much I love Bodie & Cerro Gordo, I was super pumped to visit both of these mines in person!
Very surprised and excited at how much is still intact at the Chemung Mine. We walked through the buildings and even hiked up the hill to track all of the other mines dug into the hill (and thankfully covered with huge metal grates to prevent people from falling in or getting in. Two of the photos below have the lower level mine entrances barricaded off, but the very cold air coming up through those mine entrances was a welcome relief in the heat. We were the only visitors on this day except for another couple that drove up in a rented Polaris (that would be fun!). The road to here an Masonic was lined at times with beautiful Aspen trees that would probably be really amazing to see for fall colors. Part 2 of my adventuring photos will get posted in the next 1-2 days. Come back and check them out!
